Prior to 1967, the geographical entity now known as Rivers State of Nigeria, together with her Judiciary, formed part of the defunct Eastern Regional Government of Nigeria. However, following the promulgation of the States (Creation and Transitional Provisions) Decree No. 14 of 1967 on the 27th May 1967 by the erstwhile General Yakubu Gowon's Military Administration of Nigeria and the consequent creation of twelve (12) States out of all the Regions, Rivers State became one of the three (3) States created out of the eastern Region. more...
